The Gabion Stone Calculator estimates the amount of stone needed to fill gabion baskets. It calculates the basket volume, adjusts for empty spaces between stones, applies a waste allowance, and converts the result into kilograms and tonnes.

Gabion Stone Formula

First, calculate the total basket volume:

Basket Volume = Length × Width × Height × Number of Baskets

Then estimate the solid stone volume after accounting for voids:

Solid Stone Volume = Basket Volume × (1 − Void Factor)

Finally, calculate stone mass:

Stone Mass = Solid Stone Volume × Stone Density

What Is the Void Factor?

Gabion stone is not packed like solid concrete. Stones leave air gaps between them. The void factor estimates how much of the basket volume is empty space.

Void factor = 35%
Waste allowance = 10%

The basket volume is:

2 × 1 × 1 = 2 m³

The calculator then adjusts this using the void factor, density, and waste allowance.
