How the CMU Grout Calculator Works

The CMU Grout Calculator estimates the grout required to fill the hollow cores of concrete masonry units. It uses the wall area, block face area, grout volume per block, fill percentage, and waste allowance.

This is useful for block walls, reinforced masonry, retaining walls, foundation walls, and construction planning.

CMU Grout Calculation Formula

First, calculate wall area:

Wall Area = Wall Height × Wall Length

Estimate the number of blocks:

Number of Blocks = Wall Area ÷ Block Face Area

Calculate grout volume:

Grout Volume = Blocks × Grout per Block × Fill Percentage × Waste Allowance

Important Unit Note

A nominal 8×8×16 inch CMU block has a face area of about 0.889 ft² because 8 inches × 16 inches = 128 in², and 128 ÷ 144 = 0.889 ft².

Example Calculation

Wall height = 10 ft
Wall length = 40 ft
Block size = 8×8×16 in
Core fill = 50%
Waste allowance = 10%

Wall area:

10 × 40 = 400 ft²

Estimated blocks:

400 ÷ 0.889 ≈ 450 blocks

Grout before waste:

450 × 0.30 × 0.50 = 67.5 ft³ = 2.5 yd³

Why Add Waste Allowance?

Real grout use can vary because of block manufacturing differences, rebar placement, cleanouts, pumping loss, spillage, consolidation, and site practices. A 5% to 10% allowance is often helpful for planning.

Do all CMU blocks need grout?

No. Some walls require only selected reinforced cores to be grouted, while structural walls may require more extensive or full grouting.

Yes. Round up based on supplier delivery increments and include waste allowance.

Wider blocks generally have larger hollow cores, so they require more grout per filled block.
